The locals in Mazatlan should win the award for outstanding service. These wonderful people will do anything to ensure you're satisfied. I'm talking beer delivery service at our condo complex, by the case available each and every day, plus a veggie truck three times a week with amazing produce including bananas, ripe strawberries, avacado, papaya, oranges, plus bonus items like bread and eggs. Wait another 15 minutes and up rolls the fish truck. Daily supplies of small, medium and large shrimp abound; but place an order and the next day you can have loose crab meat, lobsters, scallops - you name it.
One day, my uncle decided he wanted a chicken to compliment the abundance of fish we had lined up for dinner. So he asks the front desk of the condo complex, and they respond with 'what time?' Thinking we needed time to roast it we said noon - lo and behold the chicken shows up beautifully roasted hours later accompanied by a delicious spicy bbq sauce. Seeing as we had visions of live chickens delivered for us to finish off, we were quite relieved and pleasantly surprised by the flavourful result.
Nothing is impossible - it's a beautiful thing when you're on holidays.
#3 Dining chez nous
So the service leads me to my third favourite thing, which was how well we ate just staying in at the condo! It helps of course that my whole family cooks very well; in fact there are often too many 'cooks in the kitchen' that we start to argue about the 'best' way to do things.
If you're anything like us, two things you should definitely bring with you should you be staying condo or house-style in Mexico are cheese and wine. Sadly their cheese is no comparison to what we have on offer here; the 4 bricks of cheese we brought with us served us well, seeing as Quesadillas were a lunch staple. And while Conchy a Toro is readily available in most super merchados, there's not a huge selection of yummy wine from anywhere but Spain. So pack a few TetraPaks in your suitcase, you'll be all set.
So back to the food. What did we do with the crab? Made crab cakes! (want the recipe? You'll have to ask!)
Shrimp? Grilled them in the hot sauce that came with the chicken!
Lobster? Grilled and served with copious amounts of garlic butter (yes, those are mashed potatoes too!) Shrimp and scallops? Made a white wine & tomato garlic pasta (too much drinking that night, forgot about camera). And this is without even leaving the condo. Brilliant. More on eating out tomorrow!
